The Rain Rain Rain Came Down Down Down

Just over a week after the Isle visit people would find themselves drawn outside. The reason might vary, it was a lovely day and the air had the sweet scent of spring. It was the first truly warm day, and perhaps that was it. But for whatever reason everyone, or nearly everyone, found themselves outside and then drifted peacefully off to sleep.

As they slept a gentle rain came down upon them, soft enough to wake only those in a cursed sleep. The water not only broke dark spells and curses on the people the rain touched but for some people it brought a very different sort of transformation.

A number of the Missrecalled might find themselves awakening older than they had been when they fell asleep. Some of them might awaken with all their older self's memories, or maybe those would come with time, or maybe the memories would need more help to return. But when everyone awoke with a light dew on their faces and clothes, some people would be in for quite the surprise....

After the odd outdoor nap, many might wish to head into their rooms to get changed and freshen up. Or maybe they wouldn't go back to their room for a while, but when they did they would find a gift on their beds waiting for them....

"I apologize," Sephiroth said, despite her tone when she said it.

He listened, thoughtful. He could definitely pick up on all the different ways she spoke of everyone. And he did indeed see when she stopped thinking about it all.

"Your world sounds very interesting," he said. "If I may ask, what are the sentient buildings?" Were they born that way? Magicked into living? Haunted?

That was the strangest thing she had said and he was very curious.

"Mostly they were something else once and agreed when the Ancients asked. Pretty sure at least one of the Hallione was mortal. But the Towers and Helen... I'm not sure. Tara says she has no memory before she was awoken to her role, but then she really couldn't interact much for most of her life as a Tower anyway. he's much happier now that she has Tiamaris and she can actually see the people in her Fief." Kaylin was clearly both protective and affectionate towards her, but then her smile got a bit rueful. "Now that she understands what her people are... she's trying to grow vegetables." she shook her head, still amused by that.

"As for Helen... she damaged herself, a while back, in a desire to be able to choose her own tenants rather than be bound to a Master. She lost a lot of her memory when that happened, and healing can only do so much."

“How does a building grow vegetables?” He assumed she would have to ask someone else to do it for her.

“Hm.” He pondered this. “If she is a building, can’t she be repaired?”

"If the Ancients came back, maybe they could. But probably not the way Helen would want to be repaired. And Tara and Helen both have Avatars. And now Tara has the ability to walk around her fief."

“I see.”

And then he stared. “… How does a building walk? Wouldn’t that be dangerous for anyone in the area?”

"Her Avatar walks," she clarified.

“Ah. I see.” Much less dangerous. “How do buildings obtain Avatars?” Fascinating.

"How the happinesses should I know. I'm no ocean walled ancient."

“I thought Tara might have told you,” Sephiroth deadpanned.

"She's a little monofocused. Mostly on protecting the fief. Well... that and my ocean walled lessons," she grumped.

Sephiroth was again amused. “What does she teach?”

"She and Tiamaris decided to help with my etiquette lessons." People look less sour eating whole lemons. "Since they're less likely to be tempted to eat me than Diarmat is."

"I see." Still amused. "And you despise etiquette, I take it."

So like Zack.

"And the Dragon who primarily teaches it."

"Then it's good you have an alternate way to learn," Sephiroth remarked.

She snorted rudely. Which seemed to be the whole of her reply.

That just amused him more.

"My friend Zack never liked etiquette either. Especially since we visited so many different worlds and the etiquette was often different on each one, so there was always a new set of rules to learn."

"Well mostly I'm supposed to learn the one that keeps the Emperor from having to get indigestion from eating me."

"You have to keep learning just that one thing?" Further amusement. "It must be very difficult."

"Until I manage to be good enough at it, I guess."

From her tone and expression it was clear she thought that was never going to happen.

"What makes it so difficult?" He was terribly curious.

"You're kidding, right?" She was incredulous.

"I have never been on a planet where there was such a danger from the Emperor," Sephiroth replied, still smirking. Perhaps he was teasing. It wasn't always easy to know with him.

"According to practically everyone you have to be polite and respectful to the emperor because if you're not and he let you live he looks weak or some spit like that." She actually did turn her face from him to spit on the ground. "And apparently even my ocean walled thoughts are loud. And you're not allowed to put your ocean walled hands over your ear if he roars, not that it help, but it is still an ocean walled reflex. Can't slouch or crack a joke or speak anything other than High Barrani. There are reasons I'm never sent out on cases where I have to speak to rich people or powerful people. Pretty ocean walled sure the Emperor is the most of either of those.

It wasn't fully true anymore, that she was never sent to talk to powerful or rich people, but it was something that had changed so gradually that she really didn't realize it unless she actively stopped to think about it. Partially because in her mind once she got to know someone she saw them as them before she saw their money or power. She'd even lived in the palace for a while, though she had hated every moment of it and had moved out as soon as she could...

Sephiroth nodded thoughtfully. "Most of that is similar to what Zack had to learn on various planets, aside from the covering your ears part. He always complained about it."
