The long string of beautiful sunny days showed no sign of coming to an end. On one hand it meant lots of long lazy days that could be spent outside enjoying the sun. For those who had recently been on the Isle, it was probably a welcome change. For those who have been concerned with planting, there is plenty of water for the crops and for people to drink, but the grass and trees were on the dryer side. Not enough to threaten the trees generally, at least not yet. And Ben who has lived through the Auradon changes of seasons his whole life didn’t seem overly concerned.

In fact these long lazy days made it hard to believe that there were reasons to be concerned about terribly much. Not magically, just a natural side effect of beautiful days without hard deadlines.

It almost felt like there could be no problems at all. So of course, problems had to start. The first of them at least didn’t feel like it was magically induced for once. That had to be worth something, right?

The first issue happened in the coffee shop in the museum district. While there was almost nothing left to sell there, it was still kept open. Kyoko had been working when one of the machines went on the fritz. Small animals usually maintained the machines in the coffee shop so no one had thought much about basic maintenance on the machines there. And no one thought about how much the machines strained when there was so little in them but they were turned on anyway. Some alchemy of all of these issues led to the first spark, and from there a full on fire.

Thankfully quick work on behalf of those in the museum district that day got the fire under control before anyone could be lost. But the coffee shop was gutted. A small tragedy, but given most people in Auradon got their coffee from Mallia, it wasn’t a huge issue.

The second fire, however….

That one started in the museum itself. There was more than one over the next few weeks on the lawn of the castle. Or in the dorms. Or classrooms. For some reason fires were catching all over the opened areas in Auradon. Possibly in the other areas as well. The fires could be put out with water, further dwindling the fresh water supplies, or perhaps this is the time for those with magic over Fire or Water to shine.

The King and Queen - mostly the Queen - have seemed far more relaxed since the ball went off so successfully. And now focus could be put on other issues. Like finding other food sources. Ones that don't deplete Mallia, can be prepared even when she was busy, and could be preserved to bring to the Isle. And thanks to the insistence of one orange cat that liked to wake the King up by sleeping on his face, fish was the current topic of discussion. Sea food in general, actually.

But there was a problem that kept that from being as simple in Auradon as it was on the Isle. Atlantica had become a very active part of the kingdom recently. Well, recently before the disaster that summoned all the Missrecalled. And part of the treaties that made such an alliance possible was that no one from Auradon would fish anywhere that held signs of Atlantican life. To be safe, most fishing was generally done in lakes and rivers. However, there were rarely food shortages in Auradon, so fishing had mostly been done for sport. That meant that the fish in the few ponds they could reach were generally better to look at than to eat.

So, Ben suggested an expedition to the coast around the docks. If they could scour the area to be one hundred precent sure that there were no signs there of mermaids, talking fish, or similar sentient life... Then maybe they would have a new food source. However, they had to be sure. Therefore, anyone who found evidence of potential sentient sea life was to report to King Ben at once.

For those who didn't find any evidence, there were still interesting things to find and to, well, sea, in the ocean.

To help with the search, Ben broke out all the scuba gear he could find - snorkels, goggles, masks, tanks, swim fins, even wet suits - though he warned that anyone without scuba gear training - or magic of the proper type - should refrain from going too deep. And no one should go more than an hour out anyway. Not just because the air tanks only held an hour's air, but also because that could bring one too close to the rougher seas.

For those trying to go via the sea to bypass the tangled mess on land, sadly they would find a tangled mess of coral and seaweed to the sides at about the same distances. And the corals clearly held a wealth of life, though none of it particularly sentient... or edible. King Ben might have words with anyone who just crashed through the coral to see what lay beyond. But for those who try - hint - it is more coral.

Still, there is a reason Sebastian opined musically about life under the sea. This close to Auradon's shores, the waters are clear and clean. The area off shore is beautiful and teeming with life. If none of it is sentient, this might indeed be a new food source. So long as someone takes care to keep anyone else from overfishing...

Prep:
After the Isle visit, it had taken a bit for some people to get back into planning for the masquerade. The day was coming soon. It was time for last fittings and anything anyone wanted to add to the great work Harry and his companions had done on the ballroom. The tension in the air before the Isle trip might have been different, but the intensity was still there. At least around some people. And there were whispers about the new supposed superhero, and perhaps some people even looking around to see who else might have arrived while most of the Missrecalled had been visiting the Isle. Queen Mal is taking any last minute requests for magical costume transformations.

The Ball Begins:
The day of the ball was finally here. It was set to start at 4 pm, and people might have heard the queen’s good natured grumbling about old people hours, and how no good party had ever started before midnight. From the King’s fond smile as he “yes deared” at her, it was clear this was old ground. And after how tense Mal had been recently, this grumbling could be seen as a sign that she was finally starting to unwind.

When it was time to enter, the Missrecalled were told to form a receiving line in couples or singles as they chose. As each single or pair came to the front, Sylvando asked them each how they wished to be addressed - name, pronouns, titles, that sort of thing. Even by the name of their costume, should they choose to have dressed as a specific character, or a made up role. And then the double doors would be flung open, and fanfare would play. In a dip in the sound of the trumpets Sylvando would proclaim the introduction of the person, or people, and as they entered the trumpets would pick up again as confetti and glitter rained down upon them; just for Sylvando to back out once more and close the door to prepare for the next person or couple.

This was probably far more entertaining for those already inside than it had been when they entered. Of course the King and Queen had been seated on chairs on a high dais before anyone else entered at all. And given the amused look on Mal’s face under her purple mask, that was probably a calculated decision. Still, it could be fun for those who wished to ham it up, and if anyone asked, credit for the idea would go to Kyoko and Sylvando.

Speaking of Sylvando, once it seemed even those planning to arrive fashionably late had probably arrived, the Queen surprised him with a magical spell that announced him and gave him the full treatment as well. He didn’t think he could escape, did he?

For those who wished magical costumes and had told the Queen as much, their costumes would appear on them just before the doors opened for their entrance.

Masquerade, Paper Faces On Parade:
The ball was in full swing. For those who wished to come and go, there was a smaller door to one side for exiting purposes, but anyone returning before Sylvando’s entrance would be announced again, too bad so sad. Afterwards, eventually, people would be free to come and go. But there were lots of reasons to stay in the ball.

The Decor
There were the decorations, which were elaborate. At the start of the ball, the walls were hung with glittering lines of twinkling lights in golden settings. Given Auradon, that might not be just gold in colour. Along with that were silk hangings in deep blue. The ceiling was draped in purple and blue sheer cloths turning the overhead lighting soft as well as dotted by magically glittering balloons. The table cloths on the small round tables for people to gather at - both ones set for people to sit and taller ones for people to stand at - were blue silk with golden rosettes. The chairs were also gold framed with blue cushions on the seat and back. The floor was magicked to look like thin clear glass over gentle ocean waves at the shore. So moving pale blue capped in white, with gilt as if it was lit golden by the sun. Everything was very soft and pretty and Auradon. And it all matched the blue and gold costume the King wore, though his mask was so small it was very clear who was behind it, even if the crown and colour choices didn't give it away.

However at midnight everything changed. Those close to the walls would probably notice it first. With the first loud bong of midnight - wait, did the other hours sound during the ball? Or at any other point in Auradon....???? Don't think about it too much. - the gold around the string lights started to stain black, like tarnish creeping up and down each thread of lights. As each thread is subsumed - at the second sound of the clock - the lights flickered then came back in an almost neon green. It would become even more obvious by the third heavy bong of the clock as the lighting from the ceiling changes all together. The gauzy cloths are gone, the ceiling is black streaked with livid purple in cracks like lava, pulsating purple light. The balloons would drop as though they were large lightweight black sheer balls with purple and green glitter dancing in their centers; small magical lamps that can be thrown about like beach balls. At the next bong it would be impossible to miss the changes as the the table cloths all become purple with livid green roses and black thorny vines. The chairs go from elegant dining chairs to small individual throne like chairs made of intertwining black thorny vines with dark purple cushions that are softer than they look. They would almost have to be. The floor is now black and purple, with the purple lit and pulsing like the ceiling, being another sort of light. A dark disco ball drops from the center of each quadrant of the ballroom, throwing flashes of light across the room, none of them moving at the same pace adding a touch of almost unsettling visual chaos. Even the food and music change....

The Food And Drink
At the start of the ball, there was a lot of food on the large banquet table - food that was real in the room, and real when eaten, but vanished when someone tried to take it outside. Because the food was created by magic, there was little in the way of limits on what could be found there. There were piles and piles of pastel covered petit fours. There were towers of croquembouche in all sort of flavors with gold leaf. There were small crustless finger sandwiches of all sorts. There were small cups of soup charmingly in various natural looking containers, everything from small acorns to large gourds, each clearly meant to be single serve. There were large dishes full of egg salad adorned with gold leaf and tunafish salad with several kinds of bread for sandwiches. There were lovely displays made of fruit that contained balls of all sorts of fresh fruit - including fruit like strawberries and banana that normally aren't made into fruit balls. And they're all two bite sized balls, even when they are made of fruits like blueberries that usually couldn't have a ball that size taken out of one of them. There is an ice cream sundae bar with lots of flavors of ice cream and all sorts of sundae toppings that one could imagine, with countless kinds of blue and gold bowls and cups to make sundaes into. There is also a chocolate fountain with milk chocolate and gold trays of things that people can dip into it.

There is also a drinks station with all manner of teas and coffees - hot and iced - and things to doctor either. Countless flavors of soda, different kinds of water - fizzy, chilled, bottled, filtered - and ice shaped like little crowns. There were also chilled fruit juices and nectars as well as small cups of magically hot white hot chocolate. There was no alcohol though, but there was nearly every other kind of drink someone could imagine.

For all the food and drink there are all manner of plates and bowls and cups and mugs in gold gilt blue, all elegant. And while many of them look fragile, if they fall no food or drink spills, nothing breaks. Ah, magic. There are gold and silver fancy utensils of all sorts that might be needed. The napkins were all soft pale gold on one side and blue with gold pin stripes on the other.

- Of course, at midnight, it all changed. -

The petit fours were now enrobed in rich dark purple and livid green fondant with black designs. The croquembouche went from sweet flavors and gold leaf to spicy sweet flavors designed to look moldy and mossy. Dare you bite into a fetid looking moss ball? The finger sandwiches were now made to look like the fillings were piled between halves of actual fingers. Finger food, for those who have them pointed out to them. The flavors are the same as they were earlier, just a little sharper. The containers the bowls of soup were in now looked like they were mouldering. Where there had been egg salad there was now a dozen varieties of deviled eggs. Where there had been tunafish was spicy sashimi. The bread for each replaced with black chopsticks that looked hewn off the thorns on the Isle, with sharp spiked thorns at the top. The lovely fruit displays that had been charming woodland creatures was now monsters, presided over by a huge black dragon with the fruit balls now served out of its carved open stomach. The fruit in the fruit balls now has the same fruits from before but also some more... interesting choices. There was now also durian - though without the stink - and avocado and tomato.

The ice cream flavors also got interesting with the turn of midnight. There were some spicy flavors, and also some just really weird flavors. Salmon ice cream. Caramel popcorn ice cream. And a flavor that may have been looked for during the day that had been missing - sea salt ice cream. The toppings also now went from caramel to spicy caramel and salted caramel, red pepper flakes mixed in with the sprinkles. And in the new darker lighting it might be hard to tell if you had grabbed marshmallow topping... or thickened sweetened condensed milk. The dishes of course were now thorn filled bowls that took some skill to eat out of, the rim shaped like spreading rose petals. The chocolate fountain was now dark chocolate and the purple and green trays were filled with more interesting things to dip. Including Ghost Peppers and Carolina Reapers.

The drink station also shifted. All the coffee choices got much stronger, and some thicker with an almost burnt undertone. The milk wasn't actually spoiled, but the ice cream chunks in it sold the impression that it was. The sodas all had more carbonation. The juices got weird. Tomato is technically a fruit, so why not tomato juice? Anyone want to try corn juice? The hot chocolates were now all spiced and dark. And there was even a small amount of booze available. Though no single person would ever find more than two shots worth - at the table or brought for them. Attempts to get more gave them instead a random taste from elsewhere in the room. You could be sipping what you thought was vodka, but instead it was liquid dark chocolate or jalapeño cucumber juice.

Of course the cups and bowls and dishes all joined the darker decor. everything themed on black or purple roses with green or black leaves or thorns. And the utensils felt like rough hewn wood, and while they never gave off splinters, they all felt like they would at any moment. As for if anything dropped... it absolutely would sound like shattered glass, loud and sharp. But the broken bits and all the mess would vanish completely after.

The Music

At the start of the party, the music was handled by Ian playing DJ with their enormous music library. And before anyone asks, Come Dancing would be one of the earlier songs, after most people arrived, and other songs like You Really Got Me also played during the night. It was mostly a good set though a few songs here and there might seem a bit odd to those who didn't get to know Ian and their stories of their life back home.

However just as they were about to start up another song a woman in dark stepped up onto the small stage where the DJ stand had been set up. She looked like something off the Isle. Though a very few people might recognize that girl with the short dark hair that framed an angry looking scar on her face up by the hairline. Her long dark dress was patterned with roses and was floor length and elegant with a long black cloak that trailed on the ground behind her. She stepped up onto the stage, stunning Ian into stepping back. This was well after the introductions were done, so she was never introduced, it seemed. She stepped to the front of the stage and lifted a dark violin and began playing. The music was haunting as it flowed through the air. She got through one song, but as she started another song, she found herself joined on the stage. Utau's dress was now a short black dress. Those who could see magic/charas would see the small black devil wings on her back. She grabbed a microphone and fit words to the dark violin's music.

After a few songs from them, the whole thing turned into open mic. The Queen announced it, and then she took dibs on next, as she belted out one of her favorites. Later on in the night there would even be a duet between her and the king. And throughout it all, Ian would be ready to plug in music for anyone who wanted a backing track. Mal even magicked up a karaoke machine that somehow had the lyrics - Auradonified where need be - to every song someone jumped up to sing.

The Dancing
It wouldn't be an Auradon ball without dancing. There was some typical ball room dance type dancing and some more modern energetic dancing - all brand safe. The kind of dance shifted depending on the music. And the King and Queen weren't just telling people to dance, once the introductions were done the only time they weren't dancing themselves was when they were on stage singing, and as midnight chimed out and everything changed. At that point any who looked to the Queen would have seen her standing stock still, her eyes glowing brightly green. No question where the changes came from. But had there been a question before that?

Once the changes were complete, she downed a cup of coffee and jumped right back into the dancing. Someone might want to try and convince the royal pair to take a break and maybe drink or eat, but then the King seemed mostly just relieved that Mal seemed to be channeling all her pent up anxiety from the last few months into dancing her little black and purple heart out.

If either of them spotted someone who looked like they wanted to dance but were too shy or nervous, they would go to them and bring them out onto the dance floor, to dance with them for a while before eventually returning to each other. Everyone who wanted to dance would be encouraged to if they showed even the slightest hint of wanting to.

Clean Up
The great thing about everything being magically created was that at the end, everything that hadn't been consumed returned to its humble origins. When the party finally wound down - around 4 am - The king and queen were slow dancing. Well, he was slow dancing. Her feet were moving but she was otherwise letting him take her whole weight as the magic slowly started to withdraw. The floor and ceiling became the normal floor and ceiling again. The foods and drinks - still hot and cold as they should be to the very end without spoiling became origami fruits and bottles, clearly what they had been all along under the magic. Probably best not to think about it, just appreciate the fiber in your diet. The utensils became the usual school utensils. Which... was how they looked at the start of the ball. The strings of lights were real, as were the chairs at least. But the tablecloths that had seemed immaculately clean all dance now showed the wear of a long night of non stop partying. The elegant cloth napkins became the paper napkins they once had been, and the plates and bowls and cups were still quite nice, just not quite as fancy as they had been. People's costumes - if Mal had magicked them - would revert to what they had been wearing before they entered the ball, and Mal herself would revert to her leather jacket and pants over ripped tee combo. Her high heels revealed to be her worn leather boots with the chains. Mal's mask became her crown once again. Ben's clothes didn't change, he actually had dressed up. Except that he was in his second best every day crown rather than his regal official events one as it had seemed.

Once all the changes were done, there was little to clean up. The DJ equipment that wasn't Ian's and the microphones. The table cloths that needed laundering. The utensils which needed washing. The origami that should be cleared away, the chairs and tables that should be moved back to the edges of the room. things like that. Things the royal pair clearly intended to leave for the next day, seeing how tired they both looked. Especially the Queen. They probably would thank anyone who stepped up to help with what little cleaning needed to be done. The next day. They'd thank them the next day. At the very end, Ben would lift up Mal as she fell asleep and carry her back to her room so that she could sleep somewhere more comfortable than the mostly empty ballroom floor. A sweet end to a magical night.

Once More Onto The Beach! After much arguing and tension and preparation, the day of the Isle visit finally arrived. Some people, like the queen, were armed to the teeth and ready for a war party, rather than a ball. Mal specifically had a sword on either hip and a backpack that was altered to drop stones as projectiles from either side, where other bags might have mesh water bottle pouches. She wore her leather jacket like armor and chains rattled up and down her pant legs and around her boots, making her every step sound eerie and menacing.

On the other end of the spectrum were the people who were carrying supplies for those stuck on the Isle and no weapons whatsoever.

Somewhere between were people like Ben. The young King was carrying both supplies and spare swords for anyone from Auradon who might need them if Mal was proven correct. But the weapons would be watched carefully, to ensure that none of them vanished onto the Isle.

With all of that, with some people being determinedly cheerful and some being grimly militant, the journey to the beach was not quite as hopeful and peaceful as it usually was.

That Boat Song And Dance Once they got to the boat, the clash between Mal's brusqueness and Ben's calm patience was on display more than usual. The pair didn't actually argue publicly, they didn't even snap at each other. But Ben did gentle things after Mal snapped out an order, or Mal snapped at someone to move faster after Ben had asked their help with something.

Just about the only thing that the royal pair seemed in sync with each other on was making sure that everyone was wearing their life jackets. Even Mal wore one, which would have been signal enough to anyone who knew her well how seriously she was taking this. Then again, at some point her florescent bright jacket that had matched all the others had been... personalized. It was still bright enough to be seen at midnight, but it was now green rather than orange, and it had small decorations in shades of purple that were small enough not to dull the brightness, but were still clearly curled vines of thorn all the same. Ben's matched everyone else's except for the small crest over his heart on front and "PROPERTY OF MAL" scrawled on the back in bright green spray paint.

Sadly that was the end of any levity from the royal pair. The boat ride wasn't any easier than the walk had been when it came to the tension that came from Mal, or the worry Ben aimed in her direction that she didn't seem to notice.

"Alright, those who aren't going to be in the combat arm, stay back on the boat for the first wave. Those of you with me, be ready. Reminder, we will have no magic once we're on the Isle, I will be closing the barrier as soon as we're through. Be careful not to let anyone from the Isle take your weapons and be careful of traps. Of ambush. I will be casting a spell when we get closer to keep the ship invisible, so they won't know we're there until the barrier opens. We'll have to move fast. If they are waiting for us, they'll be ready. We don't know who is involved in the attack, who will just be a bystander, who will be active because they have no choice and who may even be captive. Be cautious. We don't want to hurt anyone who might not actively want to destroy us, but we don't want to be taken or killed either. Best is, when in doubt, knock them out and we can sort it after. Ideally we resolve this with only the people actively after us getting hurt, but things rarely resolve ideally. Hopefully Ben is right and this is all some sort of misunderstanding. I don't think he is, but we need to be ready for that as well."

Mal took a deep breath, then shook her head, her purple hair falling over her shoulders. "If the threat is real, once the immediate danger is defused, I'll signal Ben, who is staying on the boat. The only other person who knows the signal that is coming will be Sylvando, so if something happens to me, but we otherwise win, Ben can still be informed. If we all fall, Ben has a backup plan, but that will start with getting all the non-combatants back to Auradon. If we come onto the Isle and we're not attacked outright, we become the scouting party. Make sure no one gets your weapons off of you. If we can account for everyone and are not attacked, then Ben is right, we'll come back to the beach and I'll signal him and we'll unload as usual. After I've spoken to who I need to speak to. We will not be putting any of those of you who have decided not to fight in danger if we can help it. For those going to the Isle in the first wave, pick a partner and stick with them. One of the lessons Tremaine likes to teach is divide and conquer. She says that when it comes to it, people will always abandon each other to save themselves and that makes them easier to isolate and destroy. So let's show her that Auradon sticks together. We'll be putting up the invisibility spell in five minutes, and getting to the shield about ten minutes after. You have until then to decide which wave you are in, and if you are first wave to find a partner. And yes, larger groups are fine too, just so long as no one will be going anywhere alone until we are certain that the Isle is secure."

She looked over all the Missrecalled on the boat then nodded. "Alright. If you have questions, Ben and I aren't hard to find," she said, with a weak attempt at humor before she went back to sit beside Ben.

Those Remaining On LandNot everyone went to the Isle, but there was plenty to do for those who stayed behind. The ballroom still needed more decorations, though Harry and Kyoko had made a good start of it. Costumes needed to be finished - or in some cases, started. The Fujisaki twins have offered dance lessons to anyone who wanted them, from whichever twin was preferred even. For those who planned to perform at the party as live entertainment there were rehearsals to see to. And anyone who stayed back that wasn't part of any of that would always be appreciated by those who were for help or feedback.

The Journey Home
In The Space Between

Auradon Sweet Auradon

The boat ride back had been less tense than the one out. But once they were back in Auradon there was much to do. Anyone who came over from the Isle needed to be shown around if it was their first time in Auradon. And there was a costume ball to prepare for. And after all the tension coming off the royal pair, no one would blame anyone who needed to spend some time just blowing off steam or finding some other way to relax before jumping back into the endless to do list.

Penny In The Air

Since the accidental post on the Network about the upcoming ball, Ben and Mal have thrown themselves into helping anyone who wants to prepare for the ball and the Isle trip. A number of classrooms were reorganized for ease of working together, and large tables were brought out for working with fabric, and Mal found a few sewing machines she would let people use. None of the ones she put out for people belonged to anyone specifically. The ones her bestie hadn't moved out of their dorm room yet were still safe and sound with the rest of her supplies and designs. Mal actually snapped at Ben when he suggested Evie would have shared. Mal won that round, and the locked door stayed locked.

Mal, used to making her own clothes was willing to sit with people who didn't know where to start or needed ideas. Ben worked with people putting together more crucial supplies for the Isle and helping to decorate the castle ballroom where they would host the ball, though he promised there would be surprises even for the decorating committee.

Of course they both had other tasks to see to, so they weren't around all the time, but they really threw themselves into things when they were there. They did their best to encourage others and build excitement. Ben would especially be encouraging of team work, even when he wasn't there, where as Mal was encouraging artistry.

Penny Drops
All seemed to be going well.

Until one day....

Ben had been with the main group of people working on preparing. He was helping to design some masks that would hold up well - he hoped - to the damp conditions on the Isle when the queen stalked in, looking enraged.

The king got up to go to Mal but she opened her mouth before he got to her, calling for everyone's attention.

"A new post just came up on Auranet. A threat. There is a revolt in process on the Isle and they are planning to attack us when we go to drop off supplies!" She was steaming mad.

"That... I'm sure there is some mistake!" Ben said, getting to her side.

Mal scowled and set her phone to cast to the nearest TV and played the video for them all to hear. No visual, but the audio was unmistakably Doc F for those who had heard him talk before. The sound was a bit jumpy, cutting in and out, but then all network messages had been a bit glitched since the Isle got looped in.

"There... There has to be some other explanation," Ben insisted.

"The explanation is that they're getting ready to attack us, Ben! And we need to be prepared. Instead of party supplies and food, we should be preparing weapons!"

"No," Ben said firmly. "If you want to prepare weapons for just in case and drill with people who need or want the practice, fine. We can do that too. But we are also going to prepare food and supplies like we were already planning. We will be cautious, but we will give them the benefit of the doubt until we know more."

Mal's eyes narrowed. "We're talking about Villains, Ben."

"Which is what people said to me when I wanted to bring four VKs over to go to school here," he pointed out, which did weaken her some. "Plus we have friends there. Friends who would have reached out to us if something like this was happening."

"Unless this was a warning from one of them. It was posted anonymously, they could have done it from in hiding."

"Maybe. Maybe not. If there is something going on," Ben said, "It could be dangerous to reach out to our friends there for confirmation. Not for us, for them. We will proceed with caution, but we will proceed. I'll help with teaching nonmagical weapons to those who want it. Swords specifically. Anyone else who wants to help, speak to Mal and she'll set up a schedule. But in case we are wrong, and this is some sort of prank or mistake, we should also have food and party supplies ready. You can continue to use this room for working on those, as well as the greenhouse, of course. Please everyone let us remember if it does come to a fight, not everyone in the fight may want to be. No killing anyone, no permanent damage."

"And for those of you who fight magically, remember we wont have magic," Mal said. "In fact we'll be keeping the hole in the barrier open just long enough for those of us ready to fight to disembark with our weapons. We won't be unloading other supplies until the situation is settled."

"That... is fair," Ben said. "Alright. Let's get moving. Try not to use the network to talk about any plans. One advantage we do have is that they don't know when we are coming. For good or for ill...."

"And if anyone sees something posted from the Isle that is important or relevant, please let myself or Ben know at once."

Wherever anyone happens to be on Auradon, sooner or later they're going to encounter a sweet, fluffy, fox-like animal. She might be sitting on a chair, a windowsill, a banister, up to a table, or stretched out in the grass. When she sees anyone approach, she will immediately speak in an innocent little girl's voice, around 7 in human years.

"Everything is so pretty here! I love everything! This is a really nice dream. I wish I could show everything to Radley!"

Let's hope she won't be too distressed to learn it isn't a dream....

Waking up, each of the Missrecalled and their companions would feel as though their sleep was good and restful. Healing as only sleep can be. The dreams might have seemed odd or scary or troubling, but for now they are over, and it is a lovely day in Auradon. It was early morning when the Missrecalled awakened in a large puppy pile of sleeping bodies. It was easy to get free, at least. Also, there was a beautiful sunrise to be seen by those woke up first. Dew bedecked the grass, and there was a taste of spring in the air.

After the sunrise, things shifted. A rainbow appeared over the castle and lingered until dusk at which point it was briefly a double rainbow. All the way. But with the fading of daylight so faded both rainbows.

The night is pleasantly cool. And for the first night several night blooming flowers that hadn't been there before. They were in shades of purples and golds, and perfume the night beautifully. Anyone wishes to can pick the flowers to keep, they will survive in a vase for at least a week without wilting, though after about a week they will simply fade away a bit at a time over several days. Seeds and cuttings can be harvested. If they are planted within a week, they can grow! But any plants still naturally in the ground would fade away to nothing with the next sunrise.

Spring is clearly here. However long everyone slept, it was a while, and now Spring in full bloom. The time to plant is nearly over and weeds have taken advantage of the Missrecalleds' absence. There is plenty to do for those who are botanically minded. For everyone else, there are days full of beautiful weather that saves all their rain for when no one is outside to be caught in it, and yet would manage to rain just the perfect amount for the plants' needs.

But after everything - the age shifts, the frenzied attempt to work on more of the barrier of junk, the weird dreams - Auradon is once more settling into its too pristine base state. Maybe things are over for the moment? Maybe? But even if they aren't the weather seems to invite the Missrecalled to act as though it was so. This was hammock weather, laying in the grass with an iced fruit juice while watching the clouds with a good friend sort of weather. Probably best to enjoy it while it lasts.

To Avoid Looking Back, Let's Go Forward

It seemed an age and a half that adults had become children. That they ran around with no memories of their adult worries and traumas. But eventually the spell came to an end and the adults were adults once more. Things returned to the weirdness that was the status quo in Auradon. They awoke as themselves in their dorm beds in their adult clothes. And now people had to face the music, they had to deal with the fall out from things their kid selves said and admitted and showed that their adult selves would never have let slip.

And the Queen would not admit she was one of those. Which is why it was good that she had something to suggest as a distraction. Not a day after people became themselves again they would find hand written proclamations slid under their dorm room doors. It was time to make another push towards clearing out another area, this time their goal were the farms. This wasn't going to be easy, the farms aren't close. The notice also warned that this would be a lot of effort and hard work, and would not be finished soon.

So for those who were willing to help, there was a lot of work to do. Between hauling mess out of the tangle, and finding places to put things out of the way, sorting things to see what could be salvaged, there were plenty of opportunities for people to find tasks. And despite the Queen's intention, those could also lead to opportunities to talk.

Break Time
There might just be a few additional flaws in the Queen's royal panicky plan. For example, one flaw is that people take breaks. Sometimes at the same time as other people! Maybe this plan wasn't all that well thought out after all. Especially when they pulled a large fancy wrought iron table from the mess. It had coiled designs of flowering roses, the metal painted white with the leaves glossed over with green glitter and the buds with pale pink and pale blue glitter. The queen especially seemed to dislike and avoid that table, though there was easily room for a half dozen people around it at any given time. They also managed to find chairs of lots of different designs, most of which were actually intact.

★ There was one that looked like the person in it was sitting on the curved trunk of an elephant, but with cushions
★ There was a chair that looked like a ornate throne of gold with plush pale pink cushions.
★ There was a chair made to look like a high heel shoe of glass. How it isn't broken after all that work to pulls it out, who knows? Must be magic.
★ Three chairs that matched each other that looked like they were made of seashells.
★ Two chairs that looked like they came from the dorms
★ And one chair that was basically a cushion on a wooden frame that looked like it was for small animals, especially as it was tall enough that a mouse standing on it would be able to see the top of the table.

And then of course there was the exhaustion that sent people back to the dorms. The cafeteria wound up as an informal unintentional gathering place, even when there was no food. It was a good place for people tired enough to head back but who found themselves too wound up to actually head to bed once they got back. Also some of them that may have been able to avoid people they didn't want to face might find themselves too tired to leave when those very people they were avoiding came in as well.....

No one could be quite sure where the sound came from to start. A low bubbling noise that those who were awake in the middle of the night and wandering around could hear. Not terribly unlike a stream over rocks, or like a pot on the stove. Just a moving liquid bubbling sort of noise. There was something almost peaceful to it, something almost dream like.

Whoever listened to it too long found themselves wearying first, a desire to go rest washing over them along with a sense of peace. For those who could remember such a thing, the sound almost brought back tactile memory of being held by a loving adult when one was small. Being comforted and comfortable and safe. The lassitude it brought was reminiscent of the sort of sleep a child could fall into when they knew they were completely safe and loved and cared for. Even those who had never had such an experience could almost feel it. It was hard to even want to resist it. It was calming. Soothing. Safe. Go to sleep.

Listen too long and the bubbles even sounded a little like the strains of a familiar lullaby. Even if the person had never heard one in their life. If they had, it would sound like the most soothing lullaby they could recall, even subconsciously. For those who had no such memory, the song would sound a little like this.

Eventually, everyone, even those who did not hear the bubbling or the music would find themselves sleepy and drifting towards a bed. And the sleep would be peaceful and safe. The sleep of a contented child.

Those who were youngest would wake up first, even if they usually did not. Anyone thirteen or under would awaken a few hours after sunrise to find none of the grownups were awake yet.

In fact, the older someone was, the longer they would sleep before finally they would awaken.

But what confused the youngest in Auradon, people like Leia and Nadeshiko, would probably be that they awoke slightly older than they had gone to sleep. No additional canon memories given to them, just a slightly larger body and a slightly less child-like view of the world. Thankfully their clothes shifted with them!

Of course, as confused as the kids would be... they will not be nearly as confused as the adults would be. Excuse me, the former adults, that is. For everyone over the age of 13 who went to sleep, they would awaken in a dorm bed in Auradon, in the room their adult self had chosen to sleep in when the spell hit. Except... they are now a child. Anywhere from the ages of five to eleven. With the memories they had at that age and not a lick more. No clue where they were, why they were there, and probably no clue who any of these other people are! They will wake up in clothes that they would have worn to sleep at the age they awoke. So feel free to put your characters in cute little onesies!

But this is Auradon... they wouldn't go full on Lord Of The Flies, would they....?

Mallia has been very busy lately.

In fact, she's been pretty busy since before the cold snap.... On top of maintaining a seeming never-ending banquet in the cafeteria at more or less all hours, she's been....
  • playing Go on a board sitting beside her other projects, at the table in the cafeteria where she can usually be found,
  • copying her notebook of history-stories (adding illustrations and annotations and double-checking page numbers and so on and so forth)
  • checking in on the greenhouse's plants to encourage them to grow with a bit of her magic,
  • sewing more clothes and even a few plush toys (most of the clothes have been being put into future boxes of cargo to bring to the Isle, admittedly... unless someone wants something...?)
  • disappearing into the art rooms on occasion (though she hasn't in a bit, not since the new dishes appeared, all uniform, delicate ceramic, glazed in solid dark blues and purples and greens and reds, with black rose-leaf patterns on them, bowls and plates and stackable cups with handles)
  • or outside in the shopping district, seeming to meditate for a moment, the area around growing far colder and darker, somehow, as she draws in power so that the bottles of water she's brought with her glow again, before returning to leave them at her usual table in the cafeteria,
  • perhaps spotted out at the barrier of stuff surrounding the school and castle, looking for another way through it....

...She may also be found working on what looks to be a sort of card game, there at her table in the cafeteria. She's writing seemingly-random words on cards, putting a number in their corner, and on their backs, a definition for the word on the opposite side. And then she's writing that same information down in a notebook set aside as some sort of master list of these cards.

As per the automagical translation going on in Auradon, characters may see different words on the cards than one another... and that is the point! Her word-card project here is designed specifically to illustrate how languages map -- or may fail to map! -- to the languages that the people present know!

Some cards will be easy to read: practically everyone will see terms they're familiar with, like "sister", "brother", "mother", "father"... they'll probably also see such words as "justice", "revenge", "punishment", "repair", "heal", "kindness", "tantrum" (or "fit of anger"?) and "charity"... that is, presuming that their own language has such terms in it. If not, maybe they see them as written: "sœur", "frère", "mère", "père... "justice", "vengeance", "punition", "réparation", "guérison", "bonté", "crise de colère" and "charité". Mallia was writing them in French, after all.

There are a few cards which definitely would not be translated: "valmiran" and "alker" in particular would be among them. It isn't just French words she's writing down, but a handful of them in her world's Elvish, as well -- but the question is, how many of those have close-enough translations that others are able to simply read them as if they were in their own language to begin with? How many cards do they see as having the same word written on them?

...Investigate further? Care to see about helping her test whatever this is?

One day the day dawned so much more lovely than any in Auradon yet. The weather was perfect and all the colours looked more vibrant and cheerful. Even the birds and butterflies - the native ones, Mallia can decide for herself - seem in a particularly good mood. And there is a lovely rainbow across the sky.

Those with a magical sensitivity can tell there are some new beings in Auradon, but finding them will take some work. Though for the strongest among the magical residents there is clearly a connection between the rainbow and these new comers.

Odder still, the rainbow is actually anchored. Though it would be hard to tell for those coming out of the school or castle from the front, one end of the rainbow stretches from the enchanted lake - a place Mallia, the King, and Queen know of, but no one else yet - to... the back of the school! How it can be seen from the front of the school then is one of those of mysteries of magic that might never be understood. Because from every outdoor part of Auradon except at either base the rainbow seems to stretch overhead into the distance.

At the base of the rainbow behind the school however.... one of the odd new beings might be spotted, but never for long. It seems to be running around trying to gather something from the ground, hidden by the grass.

When the creature realizes it has been spotted, it will flee into the rainbow itself and seem to vanish. Where it had been searching, one could look in the grass to find that there are small flat glittering star shapes that look cut from coloured cellophane. Each one holds a colour of the rainbow; so there are red ones, blue ones, green ones, and so forth. Each has only a single colour to it. Holding one makes one feel wonderful. Holding multiple of the same colour makes a person feel in tune with a specific set of feelings and sensations.

Emotion colour list
Red - brave, confident, protective, and competitive especially at solo achievements.
Orange - A desire to pretty one's self up, energetic, and a wanting to be with the person or people most important to them.
Yellow - Cheerful, friendly, trusting.
Green - An extra love for nature, being proud of one's self without being vain, also anyone carrying a lot of green stars will find themselves having extra good luck for a while. Nothing major, but small delightful things like a butterfly landing on their nose or finding something they had misplaced.
Blue - Athletic. Competitive at team based activities. Whoever collects a lot of blue stars will feel an urge for playing games with as many people as possible. The more active the game, the better! Also they might find they have an urge for healthy foods!
Indigo - Theatrical. Dramatic. Looking for the spotlight to entertain others. A hankering to dress up in fancy clothes.
Violet - Shy. Quiet. Whoever collects violet stars might find themselves hankering for a good book, and wanting to sit inside with a cup of their fave warm beverage and lose themself in a good book. They will also find themselves thinking more clearly than usual.

If someone collects stars of multiple colours they will feel over all good and rather than feeling the emotions of just those colours, they will be influenced by all of them. This effect will be stronger the more stars they collected.

Examining the stars, they are some sort of magical crystals. Experimenting with them will prove difficult, however, as while they stay intact in hands and in pockets things change when they are set down. Put on any surface, even one treated to contain magical samples they will turn the thing they were set on the colour they had been and vanish into the item. A single crystal will make a slight change in hue. Several can fully change the colour of a thing. And yes, thing in this case can include animals and even other people. Anything it can be put on top of. though oddly handing it over does not trigger this effect.

No matter how one tries, they can never have more than a dozen crystals at a single time, though using them or putting them back or dropping them does allow them to pick up enough to get back to a dozen.

Handling any of them will always leave the person holding them with a positive feeling compared to when they hadn't any, but the feeling is slower to dissipate when they no longer have any than it was to form.

Also as a side effect of prolonged contact, people may feel so good that they are more comfortable showing facets of themselves they had not yet dared.

For those investigating the mysterious new beings
Other than the white one with the colored crystals at the base of the rainbow, whom no one would see more than just the once no matter how often they look, there are at least two others. And finding them will take dedication and real effort. With that effort by mid event one might be able to spot a truly magnificent horse with a star on his forehead and a rainbow mane. Noticing he's been spotted he will toss his head and run away. Up the rainbow, as though it were a bridge.

Anyone who managed to find the horse who keeps looking will be able to find a few more new beings two days before the end of the event. Though not all three of them had been there before. A young girl has joined the horse and the small white creature, and she and the white creature were riding the stallion at the top of the rainbow. On a small stormcloud beside the top of the rainbow sat another girl on another horse, and they seemed to be talking. The rainbow is higher than four feet from the ground but only a foot from the top of the nearest tree. If whoever found them can either fly the four feet limit or climb the tree unnoticed, they can hear the following conversation:

"The whole island is like that," the more purply dressed girl was saying. "I couldn't get there at all, it was like I kept bouncing off."

"Hmmm. That is weird," the more brightly coloured one replied. "I wonder if the mosntromurk is behind this. Starlight and I will check it out. You stay here."

"Stay here and do what?" the purple girl demanded, seeming put out. "It is a Storm! I should be going with you."

"This land has had nothing but sunshine since I arrived, Stormy. I've done what I can to help the plants, but they need rain, and that is something only you and Skydancer can do."

The girl softened then nodded. "Alright, Rainbow. We'll give these people a nice gentle rain, but you send up the signal if you get through to that island, okay? It is full of storms and storms are mine."

The blond nodded. "You got it, Stormy. Come on, Starlight, let's go see what's wrong across the ocean. Twink, you coming with us or staying here to collect those colour crystals you dropped?" She asked the small white creature.

"I'm coming with you! Where Rainbow Brite goes so does loyal sprite Twink. Besides... I can't find anymore, I think they all got carried away or something."

"Hmmm... Well, after we finish with the island, we'll have to go back to Rainbowland to get some more."

And then a new rainbow would appear, seeming to start from the blond's belt, out towards the ocean. Her horse would ascend it and race off.

Once they were gone, the purple haired girl would look at their observer. "You're not gonna tell anyone about any of this if you know what's good for ya," she said, trying to sound tough. "Better get inside or I'll rain on your whole parade!"

On the next to last day of the event, the skies would open up before dawn sending a loud thunderstorm to rival those on the Isle, though this one did not flood or destroy everything. It just made it unpleasant and - due to lightning - hazardous to be outdoors. And worried Ben because apparently this sort of storm just doesn't tend to happen in Auradon. Mal would be concerned as well and if pressed would admit that the storm feels like magic, but not genie magic...

And on the final day of the event, the sun would rise and everything would look fresh and new again. The sky would be a bright perfect blue, the grass an almost shimmering green, and the rainbow brilliant overhead. As the day goes the rainbow would fade, and with it the stars and the sense of the odd magic it all had brought, though the brighter colours would linger for months yet to come...

It happened one fine spring morning. A sudden - and brief - windstorm reduced visibility outside the school to nothing for all of a minute right at dawn. Anyone down by the docks or asleep indoors would never have noticed anything amiss at all.

When the storm passed however, the front quad of the school was now filled with exquisitely detailed statues. Most were human. Or humanoid. Each looked captured mid motion, with stone looking as though it had moved as cloth and hair and feathers had. A perfect likeness, each of them, of someone caught in a moment of joy. A laugh, a smile, a toss of the head. The statues were utterly still and yet managed to convey a sense of life and motion and happiness.

The statues seemed to be made of stone at a first glance. Alabaster, marble, jet, and lots of precious and semi-precious stones rendered each in full colour as true to the person's actual coloration and clothing as stone can go.

However, despite looking like they were formed of stones, the statues would be impervious to any and all magic that might affect normal stone statues. No stone magic could move of break them.

Which is a bit of a problem because as lovely as they are, there are a lot of them crowding the grassy area, and they are all randomly every which way, like they formed a lose maze. In other words... they were too jumbled up to properly appreciate them the way one in a museum and they were in the way.

A closer look however would reveal one detail more. The various Missrecalled would find that they know who some of the statues are of. Because every statue is a representation of a friend or loved one of one or more of the Misrecalled. These could be people from their pat in canon or CRAU or even just someone they met.. once upon a dream. But they are all people who a Missrecalled has positive memories of. From fondness to love, there is affection there.

While there seems no normal way to move them, for they are too heavy for even the strongest to budge, they can instead be moved emotionally. If someone who knows the person the statue is of tells a positive story or recalls a memory that could be seen as happy about the person to someone else in front of the statue... The statue will fade away slowly in a cloud of harmless pink and blue glitter. When the statue is fully gone gone what remains where the statue had been is a small non-magical keepsake to remind the Missrecalled of the friend partially covered by the glitter. This keepsake could be a mini-fig sized version of the statue, or a photograph of them, or maybe a copy of a hair clip they always wore. Nothing high in fiscal value or of use in a practical sense. But something likely to be loved and cared for all the same.

When The Glitter Fades - A week later.
A week after the statues arrived, any that remain would vanish, as would the abundance of glitter in the grass. The keepsakes would remain, however. Each person, when they next either woke or returned to their room would find a small plastic jar of glitter for each statue they removed. Each jar of glitter would be in the colour or colours the Missrecalled most associates with the person the character the statue had been of.

The Rain Rain Rain Came Down Down Down

Just over a week after the Isle visit people would find themselves drawn outside. The reason might vary, it was a lovely day and the air had the sweet scent of spring. It was the first truly warm day, and perhaps that was it. But for whatever reason everyone, or nearly everyone, found themselves outside and then drifted peacefully off to sleep.

As they slept a gentle rain came down upon them, soft enough to wake only those in a cursed sleep. The water not only broke dark spells and curses on the people the rain touched but for some people it brought a very different sort of transformation.

A number of the Missrecalled might find themselves awakening older than they had been when they fell asleep. Some of them might awaken with all their older self's memories, or maybe those would come with time, or maybe the memories would need more help to return. But when everyone awoke with a light dew on their faces and clothes, some people would be in for quite the surprise....

Gift In Time Gift In Time Nary A Reason Nary A Rhyme Gift In Time!

After the odd outdoor nap, many might wish to head into their rooms to get changed and freshen up. Or maybe they wouldn't go back to their room for a while, but when they did they would find a gift on their beds waiting for them....

Getting Ready
Finally, the path was cleared of snow enough to not just get to the docks, but also to carry stuff with them. Which meant that it was ISLE TIME! Time to go to the Isle and bring them supplies as well as to check in on everyone.

The day before the Isle visit there was still a ton to do. Many people had spent the long weeks - weeks? Months? Almost felt like years at this point! - making things to bring to those on the Isle. But their work, and thus that which they made, has been scattered all over the school. It all needs to be found and gathered into the crates that would be used to bring everything over to the Isle.

Morning of, the King seemed a bundle of energy checking and double checking everything, making sure that everyone was ready. Making sure that those who hadn't been there before were prepared for what they would encounter.

The Queen, however, was leaning back, watching everything over her coffee mug. While she might have seemed more disinterred and distant by far than the hyperactive Ben... Those who knew Mal probably caught on to the fact that she was noticing more than Ben was, and was directing him wherever he was needed most. Subtly.

She wasn't lazy, she was supervising. Clearly.

Once everything was ready, she pushed off of the wall and set her cup aside. Those watching her closely might see that she had been about to toss it over her shoulder and stopped herself at the last moment. Then she clapped her hands to get everyone's attention.

"Alright. We've done this before. Those staying back at the school get rooms ready for whoever we bring back, and make sure things are clean and neat and whatever. Those coming with us just as far as the docks, you're pulling the pallets," she said, nodding to the sledges where everything was loaded. Just without the horses to pull them. But that's what the Missrecalled were for.

"Those of us getting on the boat, if you haven't gone before, pair off with someone who has. I want everyone to know what they're doing in the way of boat safety by the time we get there. I don't enjoy fishing people out of the ocean. Alright, let's go, day aint getting any longer, folks."

Life Is Like A Boat
Once the boat was loaded, Ben made sure everyone planning to go had a life jacket on, and was ready to answer questions. Once everyone was ready, Ben gave Sylvando the signal. Off went the royal yacht, heading to the Isle.

"This will be so much easier once they clear their side of the bridge already," Mal muttered, then shook her head. "Alright, listen up. The closer we get to the Isle the worse the waves will get, and the storms... Well there are reasons beyond just the barrier that no one gets off the Isle without help from Auradon. So be sure you have a good grip on the rails. Once we're there, we are opening the barrier long enough to unload only. Keep an eye out, and stop anyone who tries to escape, and as soon as they're stopped let me know. I'll deal with it. Once the barrier is back up, we unload. We'll be there about 2 hours this time. You see anyone you know, let us know. At the end of the two hours, everyone needs to be gathered here, or you might be left behind. We'll make final decisions then who is coming back with us, then I will open the barrier just long enough for us to get back on the boat, then it will be closed once more and we'll head back to Auradon. Once on the Isle, with the barrier closed, magic will not work. Be prepared. If you have questions you can ask them. Otherwise. Chat or whatever, we've got a while because somehow they cleared the stu.... an inconvenient landing place for us."

On The Isle
(Please TL Here for Isle Shenanigans. TY)

On The Way back
The trip back from the Isle always had a different energy to it than the trip out. Between people being exhausted, and the million and three questions those on their way to Auradon for the first time might have...

Subdued, pleased, excited, scared... There were a lot of potentially new emotions swirling around, and this might be the first time some of these people have had access to their magic since their arrival. Wouldn't that be exciting?

Home Again Home Again, Jiggity Jig
Once in Auradon, the trip back to the dorm was almost a formality. It was once they got to the school that all those details that had to be put off during the boat ride had to be addressed. It was time to help the new people settle in, see if Mallia was up to making food for those who needed it, or maybe just give those from the Isle a chance to wash up, change into clean clothes, and sleep in an actual bed. Whatever it is they wanted to do, Auradon might just be the place to do it.
