The Rain Rain Rain Came Down Down Down

Just over a week after the Isle visit people would find themselves drawn outside. The reason might vary, it was a lovely day and the air had the sweet scent of spring. It was the first truly warm day, and perhaps that was it. But for whatever reason everyone, or nearly everyone, found themselves outside and then drifted peacefully off to sleep.

As they slept a gentle rain came down upon them, soft enough to wake only those in a cursed sleep. The water not only broke dark spells and curses on the people the rain touched but for some people it brought a very different sort of transformation.

A number of the Missrecalled might find themselves awakening older than they had been when they fell asleep. Some of them might awaken with all their older self's memories, or maybe those would come with time, or maybe the memories would need more help to return. But when everyone awoke with a light dew on their faces and clothes, some people would be in for quite the surprise....

After the odd outdoor nap, many might wish to head into their rooms to get changed and freshen up. Or maybe they wouldn't go back to their room for a while, but when they did they would find a gift on their beds waiting for them....

Mallia shook her head again slowly, still not quite getting it. Even if that were the case... it just didn't fit with how she understood hers to work. "Or betrayed by an overzealous guardian of sorts...?" Another head-shake and she sighed, putting it aside. Did it really matter, at the moment? "I'm sorry, poppet.... I'd never intended to harm anyone with any of this." And a vague little gesture to the banquet table.

"Yeah, my magic reacts ocean walled weird to other magic. No one knows why the happinesses, though," the glowing, and the pain, was slowly starting to fade. "It hurts when I am near most magic, for example."

"It didn't seem to bother you all this afternoon," Sephiroth remarked. "You can be around very magical people without problems as long as they don't use their magic?"

He was certainly powerful.

And that had the fairy looking between the two again, as well.... "...My presence doesn't bother you...?"

The worry was growing in her expression as she debated backing away.

"I'd never survive if it hurt every time I was near someone who could do magic. It is usually when it is being used that it hurts the worst. It’s part of why I am generally sent out on certain cases, I can tell when magic is being used." Among other things...

"I see." Sephiroth still looked concerned. "There is a great deal of magic-based food here...."

Really, was anything here not magic-based? He was starting to wonder if he would need to locate some normal ingredients and make food for Kaylin with his mother's recipe book.

Mallia was quiet, biting her lip a little... if Kaylin couldn't eat what she'd conjured....

...But the idea that she wouldn't be able to flew against everything she knew her magic to be. Given that so much was based on that -- on knowing, on believing, on understanding -- she glanced back up to Sephiroth and gave him a subtle shake of her head. No, not now. Maybe don't say that?

She pushed herself up to her feet easily, stepping to the table and barely pausing before picking up the plate Kaylin had dished herself. She turned again, crouching back down to sit there before her, holding the plate in offering. "The glow of the wine and several of the bottles are from the excess they hold," she explained. "If you haven't the capacity to hold it yourself, and that's what's causing such distress, then the rest of this should be fine.

"All of this is rather ordinary for my people's cuisine, poppet... though I admit that not all of it is. Some of these are of others' suggestions. Coffee, for example. I'd never had it, before coming here. And chocolate... that one, I'd only had shortly before coming here."

"I'm not a child," she muttered as a matter of habit. She was maybe in her mid 20s at oldest. Maybe. "Look, I've had magically created food before. I live in a sentient building, for crying out loud, I've eaten in multiple Towers, and Hallione. I'm usually more or less okay with all of that. What I want to know is why the actual happinesses whatever the happiness was in that wine knocked me flat like that. Even Barrani ale doesn't do that to me."

Sephiroth was relieved to hear that she had been able to eat magical food before. He hoped this would be alright. But it only puzzled him all the more about the wine. He didn’t know what to think about that, so he stayed silent and pondered the problem.

"You said your reaction was due to magic. As I mentioned, the glow of that wine -- and a few other bottles on the table -- comes from the excess they contain." She leaned over and picked up the fallen glass, a bit of the wine still caught in its curve. She held it up for them to see -- black liquid, swirling here and there with not just a deep purple, but a bright silvery sparkle when tipped. "This is entberry wine. As the juice becomes wine, it shifts from purely black to purple... and once it's ready to drink -- once it has as much alcohol as it will have, which admittedly isn't much compared to most other wines -- it glows. I'm uncertain which begets which... the color, the glow, or the alcohol... but I suppose it's all the same."

She gestured, subtly, to the table. "As for the glowing bottles of water -- I gave those as much to carry as the entberry wine.

"But it's only those two. Nothing else ought give you reason to pause."

She swore, or it sounded like swearing from tone. Not being able to swear properly just made her more annoyed. In five languages no less. One Mallia might actually catch some of. Because one of the languages she was attempting to swear in was French. "You're telling me I can't drink any of the gods ocean walled booze?!"

Hope made a hissing noise that sounded a lot like laughter.

Sephiroth couldn't help feeling relieved if the wine was the only thing she couldn't drink. "It could be a lot worse," he said, although he doubted Kaylin would be thinking in those terms at the moment.

He knew a bit of French as well, having visited French-based worlds before.

Mallia found herself relaxing once Kaylin spoke up and the reason behind her swearing fit was made clear. She resisted the urge to roll her eyes and stood up with an increasingly common little neutral smile. She set the plate back on the table -- the girl could get it when she was ready for it -- and glanced over what else was set out in the spread as she replaced the cork in the entberry wine's bottle. A pitcher of water, a bottle of cherry juice, a teapot... ah, she had forgotten to set out that honey wine today. Oh well. "As I said, it's only that entberry wine and the glowing water you ought not partake of."

"So there is something I can drink? Look, I can usually do without. I'm not Teela or anything. But I just had a happiness of a big shock. This morning I was still thirteen. And now I don't have any laws I am authorized to enforce, I have no ocean walled way home, I can SWEAR properly in this ocean walled place... And knowing everything I'll be eating I'll owe you for, that where I live is paid for by someone else, I don't have any way to earn my own ocean walled money to pay for myself for anything, and now the ocean walled wine nearly killed me." She was so frustrated. "Please tell me there is at least a training ground so I can beat the spit out of something to work off some of this frustration."

"That is a lot to deal with in one day," Sephiroth admitted. "Yes, there are areas here where people train."

"Indeed. I suggest you keep an eye out for a lady here named Aqua. I suspect she'd be happy to help you train... in fact, I would go so far as to say that the opportunity to do so would, itself, be something of a blessing to her." It was probably for the best that she'd looked away from Kaylin as she tidied the buffet table, giving herself a little moment to stifle the smile that threatened.

"Aqua, got it. Wait... Doesn't that mean Water?" And now her mind was somewhere else, thinking about elemental Water as she rubbed at her arms, which thankfully have stopped glowing.

“Yes, it does mean that,” Sephiroth said. “And she would indeed be most happy to have someone she could assist with training.”

"Sky blue hair, about to here..." She gestured to the length. "She gets up early in the mornings. Perhaps you can catch her in the gardens? Or jogging laps around the school grounds...?"

"Early... in the mornings..." just the thought of that made her look a little pale and ill. She... did not do well with mornings.

"Or perhaps you would rather train with me later in the day?" Sephiroth suggested.

"Or both. It isn't as though she goes to bed before noon." Satisfied that the buffet was in order, she glanced to Sephiroth. "Have you been training with her, out of curiosity?"

"Later in the day is better, that's for ocean walled sure. I'm not exactly good at waking up on time."

Hope squawked, though let Mallia hear his squawking as words. "She isn't amused when I wake her..."

“I have trained some with Aqua, yes,” Sephiroth said. “I enjoy it.”

He smirked in amusement. “We’ll plan on it for the afternoon then. Or evening.”

"And I'll leave the physical training to those of physical nature," Mallia said, smiling a little more. "Please, let me know if anything here needs attending to. That includes you as well, little one." That was to Hope, and it was rather obvious.
