Let's See What's In The Cards (Mmhm)

The weather was still bitterly cold, and the snow was still thick on the ground, but it was finally possible to at least go outside by the front doors. The King and Queen have still forbidden anyone from staying overnight at the museum district in case it started snowing again. But the King could be seen outside trying to shovel snow enough to make a path to the castle at the least.

The snow was still too thick to get easily anywhere not shoveled, and the snow was so heavy that even beasted out, Ben needed to take constant breaks inside to sit down and dry off. This wasn't going to be a fast task.

It was only made harder when it started. For those who slept, it would start after they have fully awoken for the day. For those who don't sleep, they'd find that they had fallen into a pleasant daydream, even if it wasn't normal for them to do so. When they came out of it, that was when it would start for them.

But what is it, exactly?

Small snippets of memories, playing for anyone who was with the person remembering to see. But the thing was, these memories... were memories the person had not yet made. Memories of the future.

Not enough to give answers, probably not enough to give reassurances for much other than "oh hey, I do have a future after all," but generally pleasant, and short. Hey, it will give people a thing to talk about, at least. Especially since this will go on for the next two weeks or so.

Yes, and he also might think they’d offer to take others if they’d found a way to leave.

He nods. “Perhaps that magic will have allowed them to return home after all.”

He certainly hopes to get home eventually.

"If that vision was at all real, they are not home but they are where they came from."

"And that was ... the 100 Acre Wood?" Sephiroth blinked, remembering the mention of Rabbit.

She nodded. "We were using it as a base of operation to gather people who wanted to help."

"Hm. It seems strange to think of that innocent place being used for something so serious," Sephiroth mused. "Did they understand the gravity of the situation?"

"We kept them safe, and thy didn't seem to want to know, so we kept ourselves whenever we could unless they wanted to spend time with us."

"How did you end up deciding to use that world as a base?" he curiously wondered. "Just because it was likely to be the last place anyone would think to look?"

"Because it was safe. We needed a place to camp for some time where we could not accidentally attract the Heartless to us."

“They don’t bother that world?” Sephiroth said in some surprise.

"for some reason no version of it that I have ever encountered has been troubled by them. The enchantments on the entry way appear to be too strong. I am trying to learn how to use that to protect a whole world, but so far without success."

“That is intriguing,” he mused. “I heard that they caused some problems back home by tearing out pages of the book portal. That caused one of the residents to develop amnesia.”

Did that mean he and Aqua were not from the same version of the world?

"Then perhaps we are from different realities. Or ot could be simply different points in time. I may be from before that has happened."

"Either is possible," Sephiroth agreed. He pondered idly how to determine it. Not that it ultimately mattered, but he was curious.

"Do you know Sora?"

"Yes, from a few different points in his life."

"When did you see him last?" Sephiroth asked.

"That's a bit complicated to answer, and I suspect it won't really help. The easier answer is somewhat earlier, when he and Riku and Kairi were children. I met them all when they were small."

"Hm. I have only met Sora as a teenage boy," Sephiroth said. "I saw him not long before I was brought here."

"I wish I had gotten to be there for him when he grew up. To get to help him. All three of them."

"I am sure that would have meant a great deal to him. He values his loved ones," Sephiroth said. "But he seemed to have grown up well.

"I haven't met the other two. There were others traveling with Sora when I saw him."

She nodded. "I have seen a few instances of them grown as well." Kairi did alright. Riku, however... she worried about that boy.

"What are they like?" he idly asked.

"Sora... is Sora. I don't think the core of him will ever change. He will always be a kind boy with a large heart and a desire to help others, no matter the cost to himself. Kairi, in every version so far has grown strong, she's come to find herself, a hero as strong as any. But not one called to it as Sora is. I think Kairi would probably be as happy with a quiet life as Sora would be bored with it. Riku is the one who changes the most, I think. He suffers in a way that the others do not. His fate teeters on a narrow point, and it is what happens around him, the actions of both friends and foes, that tilt him one way or the other. But not in ways anyone around him can generally predict."

Sephiroth nodded. "Sora reminded me of Zack."

He looked a bit concerned at the description of Riku as well. "Does he go down a dark path in some worlds?"

Oh, what he might think if he knew some people wondered if he was Riku's father....

She nodded. "He does. Generally with the best of intentions... but not always the best of results."

"That is how it often starts, unfortunately," he says quietly. "What becomes of him?"
