Let's See What's In The Cards (Mmhm)

The weather was still bitterly cold, and the snow was still thick on the ground, but it was finally possible to at least go outside by the front doors. The King and Queen have still forbidden anyone from staying overnight at the museum district in case it started snowing again. But the King could be seen outside trying to shovel snow enough to make a path to the castle at the least.

The snow was still too thick to get easily anywhere not shoveled, and the snow was so heavy that even beasted out, Ben needed to take constant breaks inside to sit down and dry off. This wasn't going to be a fast task.

It was only made harder when it started. For those who slept, it would start after they have fully awoken for the day. For those who don't sleep, they'd find that they had fallen into a pleasant daydream, even if it wasn't normal for them to do so. When they came out of it, that was when it would start for them.

But what is it, exactly?

Small snippets of memories, playing for anyone who was with the person remembering to see. But the thing was, these memories... were memories the person had not yet made. Memories of the future.

Not enough to give answers, probably not enough to give reassurances for much other than "oh hey, I do have a future after all," but generally pleasant, and short. Hey, it will give people a thing to talk about, at least. Especially since this will go on for the next two weeks or so.

"Either is possible," Sephiroth agreed. He pondered idly how to determine it. Not that it ultimately mattered, but he was curious.

"Do you know Sora?"

"Yes, from a few different points in his life."

"When did you see him last?" Sephiroth asked.

"That's a bit complicated to answer, and I suspect it won't really help. The easier answer is somewhat earlier, when he and Riku and Kairi were children. I met them all when they were small."

"Hm. I have only met Sora as a teenage boy," Sephiroth said. "I saw him not long before I was brought here."

"I wish I had gotten to be there for him when he grew up. To get to help him. All three of them."

"I am sure that would have meant a great deal to him. He values his loved ones," Sephiroth said. "But he seemed to have grown up well.

"I haven't met the other two. There were others traveling with Sora when I saw him."

She nodded. "I have seen a few instances of them grown as well." Kairi did alright. Riku, however... she worried about that boy.

"What are they like?" he idly asked.

"Sora... is Sora. I don't think the core of him will ever change. He will always be a kind boy with a large heart and a desire to help others, no matter the cost to himself. Kairi, in every version so far has grown strong, she's come to find herself, a hero as strong as any. But not one called to it as Sora is. I think Kairi would probably be as happy with a quiet life as Sora would be bored with it. Riku is the one who changes the most, I think. He suffers in a way that the others do not. His fate teeters on a narrow point, and it is what happens around him, the actions of both friends and foes, that tilt him one way or the other. But not in ways anyone around him can generally predict."

Sephiroth nodded. "Sora reminded me of Zack."

He looked a bit concerned at the description of Riku as well. "Does he go down a dark path in some worlds?"

Oh, what he might think if he knew some people wondered if he was Riku's father....

She nodded. "He does. Generally with the best of intentions... but not always the best of results."

"That is how it often starts, unfortunately," he says quietly. "What becomes of him?"

"It varies from world to world. So it is hard to say."

"Are the ultimate outcomes ever good in these worlds?"

"I can't speak to ultimate, for every version of him I have known was still alive when we parted ways. Living is growing and changing. But in every case he was reunited with his friends when I saw him last."

"That is encouraging," Sephiroth said.

"Indeed," she said with a smile. "In his case especially, his friends tend to be steadying influence."

"Friends are often very good at that," Sephiroth agreed, sounding far away. If only he had listened to Zack about the course he had been pursuing in the past....

She nodded. "Which is why it is such a good thing that we can make new friends when we are seperated from older friends." A warm smile.

"I am glad there is that positive aspect of being stranded in another world," Sephiroth agreed with a nod and a faint smile.

"If you really want to, you can find something positive to nearly any situation."

"Zack believed that as well," Sephiroth said. "He always had hope and made life bright."

She nodded. "He struck me as a good kid."

"He was. The very best. He inspired everyone everywhere we went to be their best selves and to never give up hope," Sephiroth said quietly.
