The Talent Show
The fact that they chose one of the smaller auditoriums for the show was by no means a dig or a slight. It was because even the smallest auditorium could have easily seated a hundred, and the larger ones... the show would have been lost.
Still, Mal and Ben went all out with the decorations - With Sylvando's input of course. Though some things were there as surprises for him as well.
So the sides of the stage were decorated in striped banners to match Sylvando's outfit, and the front of the stage, under where the performers would stand had matching bunting. All the chairs were covered in the same colors, though in alternating solids to be less hard on the eyes.
On every seat was a hand written playbill - writing by Ben - with a hand drawn sketch of the performer, drawn by Mal. Well the originals were hand done. They were smart enough to photocopy enough for everyone. But still.
Given this was Auradon, all the chairs were comfortable and plenty large. Large enough that some of the smaller members of the audience might find their feet swinging freely. The room was clean. And it smelled faintly of... strawberries. For some reason.
Ben chose to stand as usher for the hour or so before the show, handing out the programs and directing people to their seats. He kept taller people to the back and shorter people to the front mostly. But in cases where people of wildly different heights wanted to sit together, he left it to the group to decide.
Once the curtain was nearly ready to rise, however, he put up a sign for any stragglers asking taller people to please consider sitting further back, and headed up to meet Mal and Sylvando backstage.
There was an almost triage like area set up. The people who were done performing or wanted to sit and watch until closer to their turn had a section to themselves near one of the side doors to the stage, so they could see everything, but also get backstage via those doors without interrupting anyone else's view.
Back stage was a dressing room on either side connected by a hall behind the stage, and that was ceded to Sylvando and was his domain for the foreseeable. There was an additional dressing room and prep area under the stage, and that was given over to Gabriel Agreste for the fashion show, along with screens so that more than one person could change at a time, but he could be close to all of them to help with last minute adjustments. And so he could work til the very last moment. Somehow Mal was certain he'd appreciate that.
Ian was backstage, off to one side by the dressing room, running the lights, sounds, cameras, and curtains all from a single terrifying looking switchboard.
Once Ian, Sylvando, and the first act - Nadeshiko - were in place, Ben nodded to Ian.
The lights flickered, dim bright dim bright dim bright dim, in the - to Ian's mind - universal sign for The show is about to begin so get into your seats.
After giving everyone a moment to settle, a spotlight came up on the side of the stage. Stage left. And another Stage right.
Mal stepped into one and Ben into the other. The spotlights followed them as the camera whirred softly to life at the back of the audience.
"Welcome!" Ben said into his microphone.
"Thank you all for coming," Mal added. "But you see enough of us giving speeches all the time. We know who you are really for..."
Ben picked it up, "So please give a warm Auradon welcome to SYLVANDO!"
With that the two slid back as their spotlights clicked off. A spotlight clicked on, aimed at the center of the stage. A smoke machine triggered, obscuring the floor of the stage as
Sylvando leapt down from somewhere in the rafters, landing in crouch before standing and spreading his arms wide to the audience with a flourish as confetti flew around him.
He then bowed theatrically in Ben’s direction. “Thank you for the lovely introduction, Ben darling!”, he said, before directing a similar bow to the audience. “And thank all of you in the audience as well! Yes, even all of you watching later, as I’m told this show will be recorded. Isn’t technology amazing?”
“And speaking of technology, I can’t forget to mention our fabulous technology wizard, Ian Wright! Not only are they the one recording this show for posterity, they’re also providing the background music and effects work with the help of our own dear Malia. Let’s give them a big hand, shall we?” Sylv gestured offstage to where Ian was with a flourish. Though they might not be taking the stage personally, everyone who had a part in putting the show on deserved to be acknowledged.
After a brief pause for applause, Sylv turned back to the audience. “Now then, with the acknowledgements out of the way, it’s time for the main attraction! Heroes and villains, sidekicks and stooges, and all the fabulous rainbow of options around and between, I, The Great Sylvando, welcome you all to the inaugural presentation of Auradon’s Got Talent!”
Mallia had been asked before the show to please slip away when she could unnoticed to come talk to Mal and Ben in Fairy Godmother's office.
The request came from Mal, and she wasn't really given a chance to answer as Mal had pulled her aside quickly and then jetted off for other preparations.
When she arrived, Mal was leaning against the desk, facing the door. Ben was leaning against a wall that had a lovely mural on it that was sadly covered by piles of books and boxes of paperwork. All neatly organized, but still piled up.
"Thank you for coming," Ben started when she walked in.
Mal slipped past her and closed the door. "We have a mission for you, a secret mission..."

Before And After The Talent Show - Locked to Mallia

Date: 2024-10-17 11:57 pm (UTC)"I'm on the train that's pullin' the sick and twisted,
Makin' the most of the ride before we get arrested,
We're all wasted!
And we're not going home tonight!"
Spotlights! Smoke! Eek and Squeak flying around and guiding the lights!
"Covered in black, we lack the social graces,
Just like an animal, we crawl out of our cages,
They can't tame us!
So if you're one of us, get on the bus!"
A full bright spotlight - but instead of white, bright blood red!
"If you're a FREAK! LIKE! ME!
Wave your flag!
If you're a FREAK! LIKE! ME!
Get off your ass!
It's our time now,
To let it all hang out!"
And for the rest of the song, she insisted on being as dramatic as her vocals - hard stomps, shaking the microphone, drawing temporary magical symbols on stage with her boots and guitar... she wouldn't just sing and play the guitar. This was a performance. This was entertainment. This needed to use every single ounce of her energy, and have her voice reach all of Auradon... and perhaps even the Isle - the latter was impossible, but that was how deep her determination ran.
With the final notes, she did a perfect split on the floor, raising her guitar above her body to strike the last chords, and her bats fanning her for the pose.
"IF YOU'RE A FREAK! LIKE! ME!"

Date: 2024-10-17 07:41 am (UTC)Hedwig hoots from her stand, signaling to him that she and Rose are ready to go. The young man gets to work as he uses kinetic magic to have the hoops to float on air and move as they go. Rose, despite her size and legs, is quick on her paws, hooping between the hoops and adorably squeaking to the audience. She hops up to grab a ribbon from him and proceeds to wave it in the air in joyous energy as she continues to hop between the flying rings before she leaps on Hedwig’s back for the next part of the portion.
The snowy owl meanwhile flies across the stage and flies into the rings in a swift manner like a fast plane or a magic broom and she even makes dynamic tricks in the air. Rose continues to wave her ribbons happily as Harry proceeds to sing a calm rendition of a song he has heard in New Camelot a few times before arriving in Auradon. Even though he may not feel his best, the way he sings it is a big contrast: he seems to be beaming brightly as he sings it with a confident stride.
As he reaches the final verses of the song, Hedwig lets Rose to hop into his shoulder before she anchors herself on his right arm. He couldn’t be any happier of how he and his animal friends are able to pull this off even while he had his doubts on his own singing, the audience must have liked it that they cheered in a resounding applause.

Date: 2024-10-14 01:46 pm (UTC)All the secret.
Mal slipped past Mallia when she entered the office, and closed the door. "We have a mission for you, a secret mission..."
Ben sighed a bit, finding that over dramatic, but let Mal do what she felt she needed to do.

Mal shoved some of her hair back off of her shoulder. "But we don't want it known we're trying to get there just yet. There are too many people here from the Isle that are still unknowns..."

She looked between Ben and Mal... pretty please? "I rather suspect they're going to require a deal of help, and sooner than not, at that...."

Date: 2024-10-19 07:53 pm (UTC)She pulled out the little list she'd made on the previous Isle visit, and held it over for Ben and Mal to see. That was definitely her handwriting... and who else's? "I know where there's some of this, but rather than giving what's potentially in use or otherwise needed here, if you know where there's more, in a storage or one of the shops...?"
Re: Mallia's Secret Mission of Secrets. Ooh so secrety
Date: 2024-10-28 09:46 am (UTC)Ben took the list. "Let me go over it and see what we already have available and what can be made or repurposed."
"Getting back on topic," Mal said. "You'll go try to find us the path?"
Re: Mallia's Secret Mission of Secrets. Ooh so secrety
Date: 2025-01-01 11:01 am (UTC)A little nod to Ben, letting him have the list....
sewing needles and thread
rope
sturdy fabric
oil
soap
jars and oiled paper and string
samples of herbs and other food/bits of the living plants?
& much straw/grasses, dried?
dishes (plates, bowls, cups)
utensils, cutlery
In Foulques's handwriting:
Tools:
hatchets
shovels
hammers and nails
hand saws
hand drills
etc.
She looked back to Mal. "I shall. If perhaps you'd be able to point me to the closest spot to it, that I might begin searching from there....?" A slight pause. "And I think this time, I ought bring a spool of bright string with me, to make the path all the easier to follow. Considering all the excitement of the first path...." She made a bit of a face, somewhat embarrassed about how disorganized she'd been about that discovery.

Date: 2025-01-01 11:11 am (UTC)Ben started at her a moment with a complex mix of emotions. All of them on the gentler side, of course.
Mal pretended not to notice and looked at Malia. "A map works?"

Date: 2025-01-01 11:28 am (UTC)She put a hand down to her hip, seemingly checking her invisible-enough pockets for something. Did she still have that device with her? Had she left it at the tablet she'd been working at? Dropped it somewhere? Hmmm. "....."
