They're a type of monster or creature that's essentially made of darkness. What they're called is actually something of a misnomer though, since any that don't spawn naturally in the Realm of Darkness are formed when a person's heart is completely consumed by darkness and effectively collapses in on itself. They reproduce by attacking people and ripping out their hearts so those hearts are then consumed by darkness and form new Heartless. Only good thing about them really is that they're stupid; they can't really think, just act on instinct like wild animals. Unfortunately their instinct is to seek out hearts and make more Heartless, so... yeah, they tend to be a major problem anywhere they show up."
