Except, she absolutely was using magic. It was swift, a darkness that sprang up from the shadows in the area, stretched high as it took form into a replica of the thorns she'd seen before. This was no small illustration, this was life-sized and quite convincing. If he wanted to go right up to inspect it, he'd absolutely be able to. It cast shadows of its own, it disrupted the airflow just enough to be able to hear it, faintly, as it now had to wind around the barren branches... if he should try making contact with it, it would indeed feel quite solid. And sharp, likely....
...It even had a scent, one of green wood and traces of saltwater spray and settling smoke....
